I always laugh when people claim such states to be progressive. I’m like, “progressive? They probably haven’t come into much contact with many Africans or something/someone different, so they’re ignorance has not yet been tested or questioned or, often times, even realized.”
Sadly, Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth - the Swedish minister of culture - should actually have already had her ignorance tested long ago. Like, what was the requirement for that job? She is, after all, the minister of culture, so we’d all assume that to mean international, varying cultures. Now she will deal with very public condemnation. Hopefully it’s a lesson learned.

What China’s Talking About Today: Mother Tries to Give Away Baby Online
A Guangzhou woman contemplating divorce attempted to give away her baby on second-hand-goods website, according to a Sina News article.
The mother, age 30, said that she was not ready to raise a child alone. She reportedly listed her 2-month-old baby boy as a “99 percent new” item, 100 percent free, and attached the above picture of her child on the site. She still hasn’t found a taker.

God bless her for continuing on as long as she had. I can’t even imagine the amount of trauma, pain, and grief her ordeal must have caused her on a daily basis. That she soldiered on for as long as she did is a testament to what a strong individual she was.

The LRA is composed of tens of thousands of abducted children.
Kony makes them mutilate people’s faces and shoot their own parents.

“She says she’s just waiting to die.

I read this heartbreaking story earlier this afternoon on Yahoo!, and felt almost as powerless as the victim, Evie. I can’t even begin to imagine living so tortured a life in my own skin: fearing for my life that my true identity could surface, unable to freely come and go about my days as the self I see and yearn to be, and all because who and what I personally identify with goes against a religious and/or cultural status quo. So long as someone is carrying out their civil duties as a positive member of society, then I firmly believe it should not matter how you live your personal life. Do no kill, steal, cheat or otherwise commit any acts of wrongdoing against yourself or others, and the world can go on in relative peace.
Unfortunately, there will always be hate, just as there will always be love - the two are yin and yang. Still, a lot more can be done to eradicate hate, a nasty noun that stems from ignorance. Please make an effort to educate yourself and those around you. We’re all just trying to get by…
